Friday Flashback

Anyone remember May Baskets? When I was growing up in Iowa we would celebrate May Day by making May Baskets ,filling them with candy and flowers. Then we would hang them on friends door knobs, ring the bell or knock and then run. If the recipient saw you they would chase you and kiss you if they caught you. It was such a fun holiday. But alas after I married and moved out of the mid west no one did it. When our children were small I tried a couple times but neighbors seem to think we were weird so I gave it up.

We lived in the country so we never did the door-to-door thing. In school, however, we made baskets of construction paper and would fill them to give to someone special, usually a mother or other relative. My mother attends a women's group and they took May baskets to their meeting this week. They loved it.

I remember May baskets. That was a fun tradition. I also remember May poles. We used to have them in school. Each child held the end of a long streamer (attatched to the top of the pole) and did a dance that wove the streamers into a braid as we went around the pole.
Ah, the memories.
